episode 15 : sara smile

This week we are joined by the official research executive to the podcast, Sarah Wilson. As a well-respected union organizer in San Francisco, Sarah brings a fantastic perspective to topics ranging from body autonomy and what’s happening in the supreme court to vodka-based cocktails and songwriter extraordinaire Sara Allen. Do Aretha Franklin and Maya Angelou make their way into the conversation? Of course they do!

We discuss Tatyana Fazlalizadeh and her amazing art related to this week’s topic — STOP TELLING WOMEN TO SMILE! Visit her site and support her as she addresses “gender-based street harassment by placing drawn portraits of women, composed with captions that speak directly to offenders, outside in public spaces.”

This week’s cocktail is Sarah’s Smile, taken from the Food & Wine website. According to Naomi and Sarah, it is DELICIOUS, but sadly MK is drinking fizzy water this week. Sniff sniff.

Ingredients

  • 12 ounces vodka, preferably grape, such as Cîroc

  • 8 ounces St-Germain elderflower liqueur

  • 4 ounces Aperol

  • 8 ounces fresh Ruby Red grapefruit juice

  • 8 ounces fresh lemon juice

  • 4 ounces Simple Syrup

  • Ice

  • 8 Ruby Red grapefruit wheels and 8 mint sprigs, for garnish

In a pitcher, combine all of the ingredients except ice and the garnishes. Refrigerate until chilled, about 2 hours. To serve, fill a shaker with ice. Add a quarter of the punch and shake well. Strain into 2 chilled ice-filled collins glasses and garnish each drink with 1 grapefruit wheel and 1 mint sprig. Repeat with the remaining punch.
